1. An Awful Thought

Un Pensamiento Horrible

Sooner or later everyone joins the rat-race. You leave school and you get a job. After your first job you get a better one. Then you are really on the ladder. But how far can people be promoted? Not everybody can be the managing director-there wouldn't be anyone to do the work! So who gets promoted? And who does the work? A cynic has suggested that work is done by people who have not yet reached their level of incompetence. This means that as soon as someone shows that he can do a job well, he is promoted. And when someone shows that he can't do a job, he stays in it. His promotion stops there. The consequence of all this is that key positions in government and industry are occupied by incompetent people.

An awful thought!

Tarde o temprano todos entramos en la carrera de la competencia. Se termina el colegio y se consigue un trabajo. Después del primer trabajo se consigue uno mejor-y ya se ha subido uno a la escalera. ¿Pero hasta dónde se puede ascender? Todo el mundo no puede ser el director gerente- ientonces no habría nadie que trabajara! Así que ¿quién asciende? y ¿quién trabaja? Un cínico sugirió que el trabajo lo hacen aquellos que aún no han alcanzado su nivel de incompetencia. Esto significa que tan pronto como alguien demuestra que sabe hacer bien un trabajo, le ascienden. Y cuando alguien demuestra que no puede hacer un trabajo, se queda en él. Su ascenso termina ahí. La consecuencia de todo esto es que los cargos clave en el gobierno y la industria están ocupados por incompetentes. 

¡Un pensamiento horrible!

2. There'S A Fly In My Soup!

¡Hay una mosca en mi sopa!

An Englishman in a restaurant found a fly in his soup. He called the waiter. 'Waiter, there's a lly in my soup!' The waiter looked closely at the soup for a moment and then relaxed. 'It's OK, sir, it's dead!

In another version of the story, the waiter looks quickly at the people sitting at the tables nearby lowers his voice and says, 'Please, keep your voice down, sir, or everybody will want one.'

The surprising thing about these stories is not the waiter's response to the complaint, but the Englishman's response to the fly.

Most English people will go to great lengths to avoid making a fuss. They will accept almost anything rather than complain poor service, inferior goods, long queues... even dead flies,

En un restaurante, un inglés encontró una mosca en la sopa, y llamó al camarero. !"Camarero, hay una mosca en la sopa"! El camarero miró detenidamente a la sopa un momento y se tranquilizó. "No se preocupe, señor, está muerta." 

En otra versión de la historia, el camarero mira rápidamente a los que están sentados en las mesas de alrededor, baja la voz y dice: "Por favor, hable más bajo, señor, si no todos querrán una".

Lo sorprendente de estas historias no es la respuesta que el camarero da a la queja, sino la actitud del inglés ante la mosca.

Muchos ingleses aguantarían muchísimo con tal de evitar armar un lío. Aceptarán casi cualquier cosa antes que tener que quejarse servicio malo, mala calidad, largas colas..., incluso moscas muertas.
