The British Rail network covers the whole country. It is fast and efficient and it takes the traveller through some extraordinarily beautiful countryside.
But it costs a fortune to maintain. And the people who pay for it are the passengers.
Everyone likes travelling by train, but nobody
likes the fares-particularly the people who have no choice, the 'captive' passengers: businessmen and commuters.
Hundreds of thousands of people go to work by train during the rush-hour. And British Rail provides a good service for them.
But while these hard-working commuters scratch away at their desks, serving the British economy, British Rail scratches its head wondering what to do about the empty trains between rush-hours.
To encourage people to take trains outside the rush-hour and at weekends there are massive reductions in the fares.
But you have to ask for them. Go to the information-desk. It could cost you far less to visit the British countryside than it costs the commuter to go to work.

Harrods is the most famous and the most luxurious department store in England-perhaps
the most famous in the word.

It all started in 1849 when Henry Charles Harrod took over a small grocer's shop from a friend. It was in the Brompton Road, Knightsbridge.
